Emergency and Outside Resources
Learn what to do in the event of emergency or when you need services outside those provided by our medical care team.
Local hospitals
If Health Services cannot meet your immediate medical needs, we may transfer you to one of the locations below.
If you are admitted to a hospital for emergency or specialized care, please contact us for support both during and after your stay. Notify hospital staff if you need anything from us so that they can allow us to contact you.
You can also call us at 401 454-6625 or Student Affairs at 401 454-6600 to let us know how we can help.
Care outside Health Services hours
If you require care outside of regular Health Services hours, please contact Lifespan Urgent Care. In the event of an emergency, call Public Safety at 401 454-6666.
For insurance purposes, it is critical that you inform us of any outside care you receive without our prior knowledge, including any emergency services outside our normal business hours.
Pharmacy and lab work
Pharmacy services
Most RISD students use the CVS Pharmacy at the Providence Place Mall, about 10 minutes walking distance from campus. There is also a conveniently located Walgreens if you live in the Fox Point or Wayland neighborhood.
If you need to transfer a prescription from home to a Providence-area pharmacy, contact your home pharmacy directly.
Lab work
We typically do lab draws during open hours (call for an appointment). If you receive a lab order from an outside provider, we can perform the draw here and forward the results.
If you need lab work before or after hours, you should use East Side Clinical Labs. If you have insurance other than RISD’s student healthcare plan, make sure your plan covers you for any recommended tests.
