Hospitalization
If you are admitted to the hospital for emergency or specialized care, we encourage you to contact us for support both during and after your stay. For answers to common questions, see below.
Will my parents be notified of my visit?
If you are 18 or older, all medical treatment is confidential. Your parents will not be notified unless you sign a consent of medical release of information form. In a situation where there has been a life-threatening event, we may need to contact your parents or emergency contacts.
If you are covered by your parent’s health insurance, the insurance company may generate an explanation of benefits (EOB) with information indicating a medical visit. You will need to contact the insurance company about this issue.
I have RISD insurance. How do I learn more about coverage while at the hospital?
Visit University Health Care Student Resources and create a profile, or call customer service at 800 767-0700.
If you are hospitalized and covered by RISD insurance, you will also need to contact Health Services directly so we may assist with an insurance referral to ensure proper insurance coverage for the hospital visit.
I am worried about missing classes while in the hospital. What should I do?
If you need assistance with class absences, you can contact Student Life via phone at 401 454-6600 or email studaff@risd.edu for assistance and further support.
How will I get back to campus from the hospital?
If you need to identify your transportation options, please call Public Safety at 401 454-6376 (available 24/7) for transportation assistance.
Who do I call if I need aftercare support, or have a followup appointment or other questions following my hospital stay?
Our staff available to answer questions about your health needs. After you are discharged from the hospital, we encourage you to let us know of your health status. We can help support the hospital discharge plan of care and address other lingering medical needs.
To contact or make an appoint with us, please call 401 454-6625, or email us at health@risd.edu
Care outside Health Services hours
If you require care outside of regular Health Services hours, please contact Lifespan Urgent Care. In the event of an emergency, call Public Safety at 401 454-6666.
For RISD insurance purposes, it is critical that you inform us of any outside care you receive without our prior knowledge, including any emergency services outside our normal business hours, so we may complete an insurance referral on your behalf to ensure services are covered appropriately.
Pharmacy and lab work
Pharmacy services
Most RISD students use the CVS Pharmacy at the Providence Place Mall, about 10 minutes walking distance from campus. There is also a conveniently located Walgreens if you live in the Fox Point or Wayland neighborhood.
If you need to transfer a prescription from home to a Providence-area pharmacy, contact your home pharmacy directly.
Lab work
We typically do lab draws during open hours (call for an appointment). If you receive a lab order from an outside provider, we can perform the draw here and forward the results.
If you need lab work before or after hours, you should use East Side Clinical Labs. If you have insurance other than RISD’s student healthcare plan, make sure your plan covers you for any recommended tests.
