First-Generation Student Programs

Among the resources and support we provide for students across campus, our programs for first-generation students offer mentorship, community and important tools for academic success. For more about these programs, see below.

First-generation students at RISD

If you are a first-generation student at RISD (defined as a domestic student whose parents did not complete a four-year degree in the US), the college offers specific programs to support you through your student journey. First-generation programs are led by Intercultural Student Engagement (ISE), which supports and advocates for all RISD students from underrepresented backgrounds.

ISE encourages all first-generation students to connect with us, so you can access programs and services designed specifically to enhance your RISD experience.

First-Generation to College Pre-Orientation Program (FGC POP)

FGC POP is an intensive 2.5-week experience, which works to lay the foundation for students to understand what to expect academically and socially during the totality of the first-year of RISD.

Project Thrive

Project Thrive offers students the opportunities to reflect on their identities and embrace the unique strengths and assets they possess as first-generation college students.

Tri-Alpha Honor Society

With chapters across the US, Tri-Alpha honors first-generation students for high achievement throughout their college career and fosters a peer network to support success after graduation.
