What We Do

In Student Conduct and Community Standards, we foster a safe and inclusive environment where all RISD students can thrive as engaged members of both the institution and the broader community.  We design our processes for addressing alleged violations of the Code of Student Conduct to be equitable and interactive, and we support students in taking responsibility for violations through a primarily educational, restorative approach.

We assist students and RISD community members with any questions pertaining to student rights and responsibilities, and offer assistance in the following areas:

• Conflict mediation
• Restorative practices
• Academic misconduct
• Questions or consultation about RISD policies or the Code of Student Conduct
• Potential consequences to certain behaviors or actions

We oversee the Student Conduct Board, a group of faculty, staff and students who hear and adjudicate cases in collaboration with campus community members.

RISD students, staff and faculty can request non-academic disciplinary information, sometimes called a dean’s certification or conduct certification. Information releases will only include cases in which a student is found responsible for violating the Code of Student Conduct and assigned an outcome of suspension or expulsion. If requested, we may report sanctions to other departments at RISD.

The information in a conduct certification usually includes: 

• the incident or hearing date
• the policies violated
• any issued outcomes and if those outcomes or accompanying requirements were completed.

We hold on to student conduct records for seven years after a student’s graduation. The only information we save indefinitely regards cases in which a student was suspended, expelled or has unresolved disciplinary matters.

To request a conduct certification, please complete the Conduct Information Request form. If you are requesting information regarding more than five students, please include a spreadsheet with all student names and the last 7 digits of their RISD identification numbers.
