May 25
Non-graduating students move out
If you are not graduating this year, you will need to move out by noon on Saturday, May 25 unless you are approved for a late departure.
Jun 2
Graduating students move out
If you are graduating this year, you will need to move out by noon on Sunday, June 2.
Jun 7–9
Summer residents move out of spring semester room
If you applied for summer housing, you can stay in your spring-semester room until the summer housing move-in period (June 7–9).
Departure forms and closing procedures
Departure forms
Spring departure form (available April 22–May 17)
All students must complete a spring departure form regardless of graduation status, or whether you will depart on time or plan to submit a late departure request.
You can find the form under “Housing Forms” in the housing portal.
Check-out form (available May 17–June 2)
You can find and complete the check-out form on the main page of the housing portal. You should fill out the form only after leaving campus.
Note: If you will live on campus this summer, you do not need to complete the check-out form.
Move-out procedures
- Leave your room as you found it: All furniture that was included with your room must stay in the room and be fully assembled. If we find disassembled furniture you will be charged a reassembly fee.
- Remove all belongings, perishable items, trash and recycling: Be respectful of our custodial team. Please remove all personal belongings, perishable items, trash and recycling when you leave. Place all trash and recycling in the recycling/trash bins located both in and outside of your residence hall. Do not place any belongings, trash or recycling in hallways or common spaces. You will be charged for any trash or items left behind in your room. Any trash or items left behind in common spaces will result in charges for the entire residence community.
- Clean your fridges/microfridges but do not unplug them: Please remove all items from your fridges, clean the inside of your fridge and leave the unit plugged in.
- Return all metal keys at the time of your checkout: For your convenience, your RA will give you an envelope that includes your name and room number. Please place your key envelope in the designated key drop box in one of the locations below. Keys not returned to these designated location when residence halls close, including keys left in your room, will result in a lock change charge on your student account.
- 15 West: Across from the Public Safety Booth in the 15 West vestibule
- Colonial C: Outside of the Community Coordinator Office
- 30 Waterman Street: Across from the Public Safety Booth in the lobby
- Clean your room: Each room will receive a general cleaning this summer. Anything that cannot be removed/cleaned by vacuuming or a gentle wiping down of surfaces will result in a charge. Please be respectful of our cleaning team and clean up any large messes.
- Remove everything from doors and walls: Remove message boards, tape and posters from your doors and walls. You will be assessed a charge if items or residue remain on your door or walls.
- Submit work orders now: If a lightbulb in your room is not working, a cabinet door fell off, your fridge is broken, etc.; submit a work order for it to be fixed prior to departure. All non-routine maintenance is still subject to a damage charge.
- Close and lock your windows and doors.
- Keep your ID on you: You will use your ID card throughout your time at RISD. As such, keep it safe with you during the summer months. You will need it to access your residence hall and academic buildings in the fall.
Late departure requests and details
Students not graduating this year may request to stay in spring housing until Sunday, June 2 at noon. The cost of an extended stay is $35 per day.
To request a late departure, sign in to the housing portal and complete the spring departure form. You can find this form under “Housing Forms” and, from there, selecting the term you began living on campus this year and then choosing the spring departure form.
Late departure requests are due by noon on Friday, May 17. We will not accept requests after this date.
Important note: If you are found in your room past noon on May 25 without permission, you may be referred to the student conduct process and will be charged a $150 fee for improper checkout.
If you need to stay past June 2, you need to register for summer housing.
Storage and shipping
Storage
Our officially recognized storage company is Jones Moving and Storage. If you wish to take advantage of their services you must call them to arrange for storage. When you pre-pay, your contract guarantees that your stored goods will be delivered to your room in September.
Jones will be on campus to pick up storage belongings on May 23–25.
Storage notes:
- No storage or moving company except for Jones Moving and Storage may enter residence halls during move-out.
- If you opt for curbside pickup from Jones or are using a different storage company, you must remove your belongings to outside your residence hall and be physically present when the company arrives for pickup.
- We will not allow other storage companies into the residence halls to pick up storage items.
Shipping
UPS will be on campus May 23–25 to help you with any shipping needs. For fragile/delicate items, their team will be available to pack items for shipping.
