Engaging humanity and community at RISD
“It is a great privilege and honor to work in Student Life at RISD. The team of professionals and student leaders in all the departments that make up the Student Life Division are committed to contributing to the educational experience of all students. That kind of educational work relies on human relationships. And the richness of a creative community of artists and designers means that the fullness of each other’s humanity can be engaged. That kind of workplace and campus is exceedingly rare. As much as Student Life wishes to be in that web of humanity, we also hope you will, in turn, engage with us, with each other, and with the campus and local community.”
Ray Quirolgico
Vice President for Student Life
Ray Quirolgico arrived at RISD in fall 2023 from ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, CA, where he served as associate provost for student affairs and dean of students staring in 2014. His previous higher education administration experience includes service at seven other US colleges and universities, and a professional history covering significant experience in student housing and residence life, multicultural affairs, community service and civic engagement, orientation programs, student judicial affairs and campus health.
Enriching the student experience
All full-time students at RISD choose an education that is deep, challenging, professional, rewarding, rigorous, multidisciplinary, and informed by relationships with other people and the rest of the world. That kind of educational experience does not just happen in the isolation of classrooms, studios, maker spaces, labs, and other work/study/creative spaces. In fact, the majority of your time at RISD will be spent with other people in non-graded experiences: over meals, hanging out, in living spaces, having fun and relaxing, exploring the local area, making friends with people who share your interests, and meeting people with skills and hobbies that are entirely new to you. All of that makes up the RISD student experience.
To that end, and in support of RISD’s academic mission, the Student Life Division unites many different departments that are all committed to:
- providing RISD students opportunities to grow personally, socially, intellectually, and creatively.
fostering the skills that engaged citizens and creative professionals need for success and achievement. - supporting students’ co-curricular experience with learning opportunities that develop a sense of self, and then an awareness of one’s relationship with and to all others.
- offering programs, events, and services that reflect values of community, inclusiveness, responsibility, leadership, and wellbeing.
If you’re facing a challenge or don’t know where to find support for your specific situation, you can turn to us. We will connect you with resources to help you navigate your time at RISD, and enjoy a uniquely rewarding student experience—academically, creatively, and personally.
An opportunity for everyone
Whether you're looking for support, leadership experience, or to find others with shared interests, we're here to help you on your journey.
